Book Cover Brawl

I'm always intrigued by the differences between covers whether it be US vs. UK or Hardcover vs. Paperback. Below are a couple that caught my eye by two of today's best known SF authors.
First up is This is Not a Game by Walter Jon Williams:

Original hardcover release from Orbit US.

Orbit paperback release planned for a January 2010.

The hardcover design never did a lot for me as the type was a bit overwhelming, but it did give a more of a virtual feel with the coloring than the mass market. Yet I find the mass market cover more appealing. Eyes always seem to draw me in, especially when colored oddly.

Next up is Cory Doctorow's Makers:

Hardcover release from Tor US.

Hardcover release from HarperVoyager UK.

The image on the US release is quite interesting. but the hands down winner for me is the UK version. It is very original and makes me want to pick it up to breakout the individual pieces.

Thoughts Opinions?

  1. I'll agree with you about Williams' covers, the one with the eyes being much more intriguing, but I like the Tor version of Makers better. I'm wary of covers with palm trees.

  2. Interesting post!

I like the original HC version of the Williams book as well. The eyes really catch your attention.

As for the two versions of Cory Doctorow's Makers...I like them both! The Tor version catches your eye, but the UK version does as well. Either one of those would get me to pick up the book and explore further.
