I think my mail person hates me or at least the number of packages I get. Pyr has answered my call for some new sci-fi with The Quiet War and Diving Into the Wreck, which I'll have to get to sooner than later. Orbit was very kind to send me a copy of The Prodigal Mage, which I have been hotly anticipating as Kingmaker, Kingbreaker is one of my favorite series from 2007. Look for a review in the not too distant future in addition to an interview with Karen Miller. If I wasn't already 150 pages into Warbreaker I'd jump right to Prodigal, but I'm enjoy Warbreaker too much to set it aside. My copy of the next Felix Castor series Dead Men's Boots turned up as well in addition to a few other good looking titles. Also, not pictured is Sandman Slim which I was just handed. It is an oddly cute size. I wouldn't have thought of describing anything by Kadrey as cute, but here we are.

Congrats on The Prodigal Mage. I'll drop whatever I am reading for that one, whether i get it tomorrow or release day. Like you, the first series was one of my favs from 2007. Wish there were hardcover copies of it (Kingmaker/Kingbreaker) somewhere..even a book club edition.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the hardcovers. I actually mentioned something about that to Karen. Sounds like something Sub Press could do well. I'd almost love to see an ominibus edition of Kingmaker since it is really one giant book split into two, but it would probably bust the shelf.

ReplyDeleteHave to say, although I agree with something between 90-95% of your reviews, I do not share your opinion of the Kingmaker/Kingbreaker series.
I will, however, keep my mouth shut. And I'm definitely looking forward to reading the interview!

ReplyDelete@Jared I can see why Kingmaker isn't for everyone. I enjoyed the main characters and their growth along with the mythology Miller created. Many books along these lines fall flat, but this series worked for me.
ReplyDeleteI should also mention I'm not use to getting this many review copies. Only recently have they started to come in, which I appreciate. The Sandman Slim was a preorder from Amazon for me. After Warbreaker I'm going to have a tough decision on what to read next. Maybe I should do a poll?
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Miller's Mage series, I've seen mixed reviews but for some reason it always falls off my radar.
ReplyDeleteWell, Orbit did allow the SFBC to issue a Brent Weeks omnibus..and its HUGE..1500+ pages I believe. Seems like the Kingmaker/Kingbreaker books should have gotten a similar treatment. Maybe they figure the sales wouldn't justify it now, since the books are 2 years old.
ReplyDeleteDel Rey is doing an omnibus edition of the first 3 Temeraire books as a hardcover later this year and those have been out a couple years. So anything is possible.
